University College Cork |
Founded in 1845, UCC is one of Ireland's oldest institutes of higher learning and was
originally established as Queen's College. The original site chosen for the University
is believed to have a connection with the patron saint of Cork, St Finbarr, who set
up a monastery and school of learning in close proximity to the University. Hence
the University's motto "Where Finbarr Taught, Let Munster Learn".

This exquisite park is undoubtedly the jewel in Cork's crown. Antoine House
backs on to it! Fitzgerald's Park is also home to the
Cork Museum.

| St. Fin Barre�s Cathedral |
Just 5 minutes walk from the City Centre, St Finnbarre�s Cathedral is on the site
chosen by St Finnbarr, the patron saint of Cork, to found his monastic school in 650AD.
The Cathedral, French Gothic in style, was designed by William Burgess of London in the mid 1800s.

| Church of St. Anne - Shandon Bells |
The name Shandon comes from the Irish, Sean Dun, and means Old Fort.
Shandon was one of 28 settlements in and around ancient Cork, and since the 6th century there has been a Christian witness in this place.
The present church dates back to 1722. The steeple houses the famous bells of Shandon and the tower itself is one of the city's best-known landmarks.

Located on North Main Street in the restored St. Peter's Church, (c.1270), the Cork Vision Centre
contains a 1:500 scale model of the city with permanent and visiting exhibitions on Cork's past, present and future.
Makes an excellent starting point for tours of Cork.

| Red Abbey |
Abbey Street (off Douglas Street). The oldest piece of architecture to be seen in Cork City
is the tower of the Red Abbey Friary. A late 13th century date for the Friary's Foundation
seems likely and the tradition of its foundation in 1420 by Patrick De Courcy may preserve
the memory of a rebuilding.

| The Coal Quay |
Although the Coal Quay is actually on the riverside further along to the right, the famous market of that
name is in Cornmarket Street. Morning is the best time to see this open-air market, where the dealers' raucous wit accompanies their
bargaining over a heterogeneous assortment of articles, from fruit and vegetables to second-hand clothes, books and an incredible
assortment of oddments and bric-a-brac.
