University College Cork

Founded in 1845, UCC is one of Ireland's oldest institutes of higher learning and was originally established as Queen's College. The original site chosen for the University is believed to have a connection with the patron saint of Cork, St Finbarr, who set up a monastery and school of learning in close proximity to the University. Hence the University's motto "Where Finbarr Taught, Let Munster Learn".

Fitzgerald's Park This exquisite park is undoubtedly the jewel in Cork's crown. Antoine House backs on to it! Fitzgerald's Park is also home to the Cork Museum.

St. Fin Barres Cathedral Just 5 minutes walk from the City Centre, St Finnbarres Cathedral is on the site chosen by St Finnbarr, the patron saint of Cork, to found his monastic school in 650AD. The Cathedral, French Gothic in style, was designed by William Burgess of London in the mid 1800s.

Church of St. Anne - Shandon Bells The name Shandon comes from the Irish, Sean Dun, and means Old Fort. Shandon was one of 28 settlements in and around ancient Cork, and since the 6th century there has been a Christian witness in this place. The present church dates back to 1722. The steeple houses the famous bells of Shandon and the tower itself is one of the city's best-known landmarks.

Red Abbey Abbey Street (off Douglas Street). The oldest piece of architecture to be seen in Cork City is the tower of the Red Abbey Friary. A late 13th century date for the Friary's Foundation seems likely and the tradition of its foundation in 1420 by Patrick De Courcy may preserve the memory of a rebuilding.

The Coal Quay Although the Coal Quay is actually on the riverside further along to the right, the famous market of that name is in Cornmarket Street. Morning is the best time to see this open-air market, where the dealers' raucous wit accompanies their bargaining over a heterogeneous assortment of articles, from fruit and vegetables to second-hand clothes, books and an incredible assortment of oddments and bric-a-brac.

English Market Located on the Grand Parade in Cork City Centre and locally known as the English Market, the market stalls are a haven of fresh food and a place where the people of Cork go to get the best of produce and, in particular, where one can still find Cork delicacies such as tripe and drisheen. The markets continue to be very much part of Cork life.

Cork Butter Museum Cork's unique museum - the story of Ireland's most important food export and the world's largest butter market. Well worth a visit!

Cork City Gaol Step back in time to see what 19th/early 20th Century life was like in Cork - inside and outside prison walls. Amazingly lifelike figures, furnished cells, sound effects and fascinating exhibitions. And at the same location, visit the Visit the Radio Museum Experience.
